Winter follies countdown to Hawaii boast #5 · Friday December 12, 2008 by colin newell
Starting the seven day count-down to departure for the Islands of Hawaii. Have not been blogging much lately – in week 4 of a persistent head and chest cold – got to get this whipped before next week for obvious reasons.
Maybe going to a Hockey game tonight was not the brightest move.
Oh well.
The official Hawaiian trip name for this expedition is “The Hell or High Water” tour. As soon as the plane lifts off the runway, the call sign will change to the “Hawaii Five Oh” tour – I think some close friends will get this – it is pretty obvious.
It is funny about travel. You would think we were leaving the Planet for 3 months in space. It is little more than 2 weeks away and I feel like I have spent the last 10 months working out the details. It is not rocket science.
Anyway – the biggest challenge is deciding how many radio type gadgets to take along. And you know… and I am almost ashamed to say this – I have given very little thought to the coffee aspect of this trip. And that is supposed to be a big part of the visit to Kona. I have done very little in the way of arranging tours or contacting anybody – which is a shame. I have some special friends in Honolulu who are going to be guiding a few tours and they are in the coffee business (on an academic basis) but not necessarily with the farm in mind. Better get on that so as to not entirely shred my credibility.
Thankfully, our digs, one condo in Waikiki and one in Kona both have wi-fi so staying on the grid will not be a problem. We will have one night in Hilo so as to take advantage of the Volcano.
Stay tuned.

Small changes coming to this blog. Done with ranting about the Olympics. There is some good local Government in Vancouver now – people voted for change and got it. In the next Provincial election, Gordon Campbell will probably have his ass kicked out of office and replaced with something equally bad leaning in the opposite direction.
It is up to the electorate (which I am a microscopic part of…)
Anyway – in about a month or so, heading off to Hawaii for a much needed vacation – some coffee research and a general get-away from the everyday of Victoria on Vancouver Island. Will be blogging from there via a small PC connected to the wireless network at our digs.
Vacation is pretty much paid for (in advance) – which is cool. Only thing to worry about is eating, drinking and not taking in too much Sun.
More changes. New years resolution in advance. No more negative crap and rants. Have been doing some writing for a food magazine in the Province of B.C. – have had some stuff printed and hope to do more. Coming off as a raving loonie tune will not be doing much for my cred – but I hope to stay a little funny.
Will be working with Bob Harris in the new year on a new look for his site and possible some face-lifts to CoffeeCrew.Com and DXer.ca (my telecom page). All good.
Anyway – stay tuned friendly reader.

Summer fun food and drink - Doctor Horrible online now · Sunday July 20, 2008 by colin newell
It is not often that I suggest doing something (to my readers) with a strict time-line.
Like, right now. Do it now. Not tomorrow. But now.
Especially when that something is going to make you smile. Broadly. You might even laugh. I promise you that you might laugh. And see something in this… within yourself. Which might make you feel kind of warm and tingly.
To quote activist, comedian, writer and friend Bob Harris – “If you do not enjoy watching this, then there is nothing inside you worth saving!”
Took the words right out of my… well, maybe not.
The Doctor Horrible Sing Along Blog. Go there now.
There are three acts. Watch one. Then Two. And finally three.
You will be glad you did.
And when you do, come back here. And e-mail me and let me know how it went. A simple thank-you will do.
But don`t hold back. Anything is good.

Big Brother Air travel rant #2 how long is your pocket knife · Sunday May 25, 2008 by colin newell
Long delays at Vancouver International Airport on Friday were the product of a traveler slipping through security screening with…
- A handgun?
- A grenade?
- A copy of the Koran?
- A copy of the Torah?
- A copy of Mad magazine?
- A bottle of mother’s milk?
Nope. Security staff spotted something on an X-ray machine around 10 a.m.
The passenger had already collected his bag and walked into the secure area of the domestic terminal.
At least 10 domestic flights were grounded for the next hour and a half while staff searched for the passenger and a knife.
What kind of knife? Steak knife? No. K-Bar knife? Hardly.
A pocket knife… probably 10cm long.
Woo! Scary!! Pocket knife! Woo!
Listen up folks. I am Ex Canadian Army and I can do more damage to the average human with a slice of stale pizza than a randomly selected civilian can do with a hunting knife.
So. Enough of these stupid security alerts at Airports.
Small statistic: The U.S. has spent billions on protecting us from terrorists in the U.S.A.
Ironically, bath tubs have killed 100 times more Americans since 9/11 than honest-to-goodness wild-eyed terrorists.
That’s right folks, bath tubs. You’ve seen them in bath rooms all over America… perhaps you have one in your own home. But do you really know what lies behind those porcelain surfaces, composite materials and space-age plastics?
I do: Mayhem, tears and death…
by slippage.
